TALENT DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST, NEWCREST MINING LIMITED

Summary of Role:

The Talent Development Specialist is a member of Learning and Talent Team, a section within Human Resources that oversees corporate learning and development programs for leadership, management and employee performance improvement. In addition, the talent specialist manages both new hire on-boarding and the organization’s continuous performance management approach which includes the annual performance evaluation and planning process. This person will “wear many hats,” many of which are related to HR software and information systems and their use in implementing, tracking, and evaluating the effectiveness of the learning and development function.

The role I occupied maintains, manages and troubleshoots our systems, communicates information on Learning and Talent processes, programs, and tools across the organization; develops and disseminates necessary documentation and curriculum; and contributes to the development of work plans and budgets. I act as a liaison with other departments and outside vendors, including high-level staff such as the General Manager, the executive leadership team, the Corporate Talent & Capability team in Melbourne and senior country and project leaders. I handle confidential and non-routine information and explain relevant HR policy when necessary. 

Accomplishments:

  • Re-Designed Critical Skills modules (Effective Communication, Performance Optimization, Problem Solving and Coaching for Performance) within 3 months

  • Managed and developed Succession Plan and Development plans for employees identified to move in managerial roles.

  • Defined business needs and internal training requests when developing Learning and Talent initiatives, sessions and programs. Led the needs assessment, curriculum design, and development process in response to those needs following proven instructional methods

  • Identified and developed talent using psychometric assessments (Modified Career Path Appreciation – MCPA, Hogan’s)

  • Presented to site leaders and explained plans and strategies for the learning and talent framework aligned with Business vision and mission

  • Designed Talent Risk Assessment Framework for Lihir Site

LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT ADVISOR, NEWCREST MINING LIMITED

Role Summary:

The Learning & Development Advisor role that I occupied acted in the capacity of a learning and development business partner responsible for developing learning solutions to workforce needs that will meet the needs of staff and services, working closely with subject experts, professional leads and senior managers. The position did expert learning professional working independently and with others in creating, designing and delivering a range of learning activities in order to meet defined learning outcomes from the Newcrest Talent and Capability development strategy.

I also build relationships with key stakeholders in order to develop meaningful career development pathways and provide learning opportunities that will enable staff to progress. An external-facing role, I have been required to maintain active, open and robust lines of communication between the departments of the Trust, to ensure learning provision meets the needs of the organisation. I delivered an outreach service, ensuring that learning and development opportunities are available and advising individuals on learning appropriate to their goals and developing managerial capabilities to promote and encourage learning across the whole workforce.

Accomplishments: 

  • Designed, developed and delivered Learning and Development programs flowing from the Learning and Development Strategy.

  • Designed and developed quality learning content, materials and resources for face-to-face training/workshops and designing materials for blended learning using ADDIE and 4MAT design principles using Adobe Captivate.

  • Conducted training needs analysis, learning needs analysis and provide advice and training options to employees of Newcrest Mining Limited.

  • Facilitated Managing Matters Training (Face-to-Face Delivery)– A people and Leadership development training for Supervisors and Coordinators of different sections at Newcrest

  • Facilitated in-house soft skills courses (MS Office Suite – Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook Training, Problem Solving, Communication, Coaching for Performance, Performance Optimization, etc)

Role Summary:

Training Consultant responsibilities included identifying skills and knowledge gaps, developing instructional material and organizing learning activities.

Role Summary:

This role involved arrangements for courses, programs and meetings that develop educational objectives. The officer ensures educational programs meet with standards and quality of performance. Development plans for education services are made by the officer through talks, seminars, courses, meetings and demonstrations. Educational resources are developed, prepared and managed by educational officers. Training and staff development also are prepared by these officers. Educational equipment and material are maintained and secured by education officers as well. This role contributes to the development of refugees to learn English as a Second Language (ESL).

Accomplishment: 

  • Facilitated training on English as a Second Language (ESL) to refugees on Manus Island

  • Developed Standard Operating Procedures and Process for the Education Team

  • Developed systematic approaches of psychologically dealing with refuges to motivate them to attend training sessions

Role Summary:

Responsible for providing analysis to PNGJOBSEEK and its existing practices, and then makes recommendations necessary for long-term goals. This role involves human resources management, marketing, accounting, and other related duties. This role played a critical role in helping to improve all organization by assessing company’s strengths, areas of improvements and recommending possible solutions.

Role Summary:

My Background

Darius has proven experience and has been part of the Organizational Development changes such as workforce strategy, work culture and innovation in human systems approaches at Newcrest Mine Lihir Operation and in the Learning and Talent Team. He recently drafted and submitted the Three Year Training Plan to the HR Manager that submitted the Three Year Training Plan to the Department of Labour and Industrial Relations (DLIR). He also manages the Accelerated Development Program, Diversity & Inclusion during Succession Planning  and other talent programs. Some of the organizational changes which Darius was part of include the rebranding of GDP program to Young Talent Programme, development of Trupla Learning Framework to name a few towards achieving the site vision of 0-1-20.


Darius holds a Master Degree of Education specializing on Digital Learning (Monash University), Graduate Certificate of Educational Studies (Monash University), Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management (University of South Australia) and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (International Training Institute). He is a member of AHRI (Australian Human Resource Institute).


There are so many people in the world who never have the opportunity to pursue the career they love. I’m not one of them. I love what I do and since I started my career in Education sector and then shifting career to Human Resource Management, I’m thrilled to say that I’ve learned from so many trained professionals in my field. I know that I still have so much to learn from others in the industry. I’m a hard worker, a team player and excited to see what projects could benefit from my unique skill set.
